Taiwanese food is gradually influenced by the West, and there are many pasta stores on the streets. But do you know where pasta comes from? Why is the food in Southeast Asia more sour and spicy? It has to do with the local climate. Tzu Chi University held the first “International Food and Beverage Culture Festival”, inviting students and faculty to learn about the origins of European and Southeast Asian food.

The first International Food and Beverage Cultural Festival at Tzu Chi University attracted over 100 students and faculty members, including the Dean of the International Collage, Guang-Huei Lin, and the Director of Bachelor Program in International Service Industry Management, Cheng-I Zhu. From check-in, reception, to the preparation of food in groups, professional planning created a feast for both guests and hosts. The meal was divided into two groups, European and Southeast Asian. The European group prepared salad, European bread, pasta, dessert and coffee, while the Southeast Asian menu included turmeric rice, Indonesian fried noodles, fried egg with chili, scallops, and Cendol drinks.

The earliest pasta was freshly made, and only commoners ate dried pasta, while salads started with salt and bar, and later with oil and other seasonings. In Indonesia, if you want to learn how to grab rice with your hands, please remember to use your right hand. What is Tempeh? Is Cendol drink good? Through the students’ explanations, we have gained a lot of knowledge while enjoying the exotic food.

The “International Food and Beverage Culture Festival” was co-organized by the Foreign Language Education Center of Tzu Chi University and the two courses “Planning and Management of Meetings, Expositions, Events, and Conventions (MEEC)” and “International Food and Beverage Management” of the Bachelor Program International Service Industry Management. The 43 students who took the elective division worked together to plan the whole activity. The instructors Konstatin Weicht and I-Ting Chen said that these two courses have students from different departments in Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Mozambique, South Korea, and the Philippines. 60% of Taiwan’s economic activities are in the service industry, and the proportion in foreign countries is even higher. The service industry is very difficult to define because there is not just one industry, it is a cross-sectoral one. Through organizing events, students have to learn to plan time, organize, execute venue search, design menus, and understand their target audience. They learn to apply what they have learned in their textbooks, how to work together, and how to put Tzu Chi humanity into practice.

Yi-Fan Tang, a student from the Communication Department of the marketing group, said that there are some opportunities to practice in class. Because of the activities, it is necessary to know which type of social media the audience uses. Since the “International Food and Beverage Cultural Festival” is mainly students, it mainly focuses its publicity on IG and Facebook.

Just for designing the menu, everyone spent more than a month discussing and preparing. Wei-Ting Jiang , a student of national management, said that he learned communication and problem-solving methods during the process. They also hope that through the event, everyone will not only taste delicious food, but also learn about the cuisine of different countries.

This is the first time that Tzu Chi University held the “International Food and Beverage Cultural Festival”. Zhou, a postgraduate student from the Department of Post-Baccalaureate School of Chinese Medicine, said that through the event, he learned about the different food cultures in Europe and Indonesia. The food prepared by the students was also very delicious, showing a very professional performance. Zong-Xi Lai, Cicheng father, said that there are currently only two years of students in International Service Industry Management Program, and the students have already been able to hold large-scale cross-cultural activities. From food to venue layout, they are all arranged by themselves. I believe it will get better and better in the future.

These two classes also give students from other departments different learning opportunities. Jian-Hui Li, a third-year student in the Departement of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics , usually does experiments in the laboratory. He wants to study Indonesian traditional drink Cendol, so he chooses this course. Jian-Hui Li said that he learned formula standardization, cost control, menu design, etc. from the class, which is very different from what he learned in the Department of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics, and because of this, he knew students from different departments. It is a highly recommended course.

The Foreign Language Education Center of Tzu Chi University stated that through this activity, the soft power of student leadership will be cultivated, and at the same time, local students and international students will have language and cultural exchanges, and an international friendship bridge will be established. Seamless transition to employment.
